LaKesha was born in Buffalo, NY where some of her fondest memories are of playing kickball and softball in the park, hopscotch, splash pads, making snow angels, and grandma’s house.

At the age of 7, her parents moved this northern girl to the south, Albany, Ga., where she lived for 12 years. Some of her many joys during this time were riding her bike, skating, playing the clarinet, reading, writing, and hanging out with friends. LaKesha was also involved in an array of clubs and organizations including, ballet/tap dance, Girl Scouts, Jack & Jill of America, NAACP and the junior choir and usher board, which all fostered life long skills. During her high school years, she was a member of the varsity track & field team and the marching & concert band. As a teenager, her most notable accomplishments were being selected to perform in both District and All-County band, being named “Most Talented” by her senior class, and being crowned Miss Black & Gold by the Alpha Phi Alpha’s scholarship pageant.

At age 19, LaKesha returned to New York to attend college where she studied Child Psychology, Behavioral Science, and Health & Human Services. Working with children has always been a rewarding experience for her. She is a supporter of the National Association for Children’s Behavioral Health, as helping children understand their own thought processes, emotional responses, and stress reactions so that they can manage them in healthy, safe, and appropriate ways is a fulfilling mission. LaKesha is also a wife and mother of two talented and creative young adults. Outside of writing, she enjoys watching movies, music, and meditating.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

as a writer

as a writer

LaKesha has always expressed herself through music and writing. If she wasn’t playing her clarinet, you could rest assured that a notebook and pen were nearby. She took a liking to writing in the third grade where she wrote her first fictional story titled “The Scary House”. OK, the title may have needed a little work, but the story was definitely packed with action and suspense, earning her an A+. Today, she enjoys writing stories that explore feelings and emotions, funny feel-good books, and stories that encourage and inspire. Lakesha is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators and an award winning author from Children’s Book International. Beyond the colorful pages of children’s books, she enjoys writing poetry and short stories. She is constantly seeking inspiration from the world around her with the understanding that every moment is a potential story waiting to be told.

Engage students by incorporating interactive read-aloud sessions where they can participate by asking questions, making predictions, or even acting out parts of the story. This interactive approach makes reading a collaborative and enjoyable activity.

Utilize educational apps, audio-books, and online resources to supplement traditional reading materials. Technology can add an element of fun and interactivity to the reading experience, especially for tech-savvy young learners.

Encourage a sense of community and friendly competition by organizing book clubs or reading challenges in the classroom. Children can discuss their favorite books, recommend titles to each other, and set reading goals fostering a culture of reading among peers.
